Modes for Urban Moods- Teressa Alameida

I was hanging out over at ITP and snapped a few photos of Teresa Alameida’s thesis project, “Modes for Urban Moods.” The idea behind the project consists of: “A suite of wearables - Urban coping mechanisms which explore relationships in public spaces and materialize invisible social networks.” Apparently this is the only garment that is completed, however sketches for the other wearables are displayed. With this garment the wearer inflates the garment to give themselves more space in crowded conditions. Interesting because it is the exact opposite approach I took with RECOIL which is to challenge that desire for additional space not by giving in, but by forcing people physically closer. (Recoil also uses magnets and doesn’t inflate, but what’s more interesting than the technology is the similarity of social context the projects aim to address.)

The Illum Jacket by PDD and Goose Design

bad, bad, bad… i’ve been neglecting this blog. but i’m headed out to montreal soon to give a talk at the htmlles festival. so many cool people whose work i admire and company i enjoy will be there. and montreal is such a great city. looking forward to catching up with friends!

A few weeks ago I was introduced to this very cool artist Martin Beauregard, who told me about one his works, titled “Game Over.” Martin was kind enough to send over some photos and a description.

Just by chance I caught the the Apprentice on TV tonight. I’ve never seen it before, but I guess the show operates like all the other reality shows out there, where the contestants are put into groups and given challenges. This episode the would be apprentices were asked to create a wearable technology line for American Eagle Outfitters and were responsible for presenting their work to American Eagle executives.

Finger Dress by XS Labs

After a related post which included a reference to the Finger Dresses by XS Labs, I was reminded of another older project that I’ve always admired. The Scribble skirt by Megan Galbraith utilizes a large format inkjet printer to automatically print garment and textile patterns on cotton fabric on the fly. The entire process is enabled through a software program Galbraith wrote allowing for up to 15 designs to be generated and queued for printing.

Power Pilgrims by Desearch and Revelopment

UPDATE: David Cuartielles, one fifth of the group behind Desearch and Revelopment emailed in a correction. The Power Pilgrims is actually a project by Desearch and Revelopment, of which Erik Sandelin and Magnus Torstensson of Unsworn are members. Other team members include Livia Sunesson and Otto von Busch

This is a great project by Desearch and Revelopment. Unsworn. The collaborative duo, Swedish artists Erik Sandelin and Magnus Torstensson They created thePower Pilgrims, a hilarious performance where four Amber pilgrims wearing robes held together only by recycled electromagnets must ritualistically charge themselves (meaning the battery pack powering the electromagnets) to keep their garments intact.
