i’ve been back at home in los angeles county for five days now. today i was in the fashion district and the california flower market. i had actually never been down there before (though i’ve driven through a few times). my mother’s good friend took us around, having a longstanding insider’s knowledge of the area from his many years as a southern california florist. santee alley was pretty overwhelming - with copious merchandise and bargain deals everywhere - the open market stalls reminded me of mexico city, my mother’s friend commented on how it reminded him of hong kong, and it was also a lot like canal street in nyc… but with sunshine and salsa music playing in the background and the great blue cloudless california sky overhead.

ALT+CTRL is the name of the independent and alternative games festival hosted by UCI this fall. submissions are currently being accepted! - the game culture and technology lab sounds like they’re doing some interesting work…

usman haque is developing the sky ear - to be launched may 4th. the sky ear is a cloud of several hundred helium balloons embedded
with mobile phones.

The balloons will contain miniature sensor circuits (simple gaussmeters) that detect levels of electromagnetic radiation at a variety of frequencies. When activated, the sensor circuits will cause ultra-bright coloured LEDs to illuminate. The cloud will glow and flicker brightly as it passes through varying radio and microwave spaces.

we saw usman in london where he brought his gaussmeter circuit to jonah’s simpletext performance at the ICA - may the 4th be with you, usman.

so when jonah blogged house gymnastics he also provided a link to the submoves, a similar project done by parsons school of design students. and then you have fiasco, which i don’t think is actually up and running just yet - but extends the concept by adding territoriality to the mix. with fiasco stupid stunts win you turf in nyc, as opposed to owning a move (in the case of submoves).

so anne just blogged the bleex project which reminded me of the prosthetic ass that jonah blogged not too long ago. it’s not usual that i repost images here but this was just too good.

living outside of the united states for the last year or so i’ve missed all the action surrounding the telelvision show The O.C. but apparently it’s coming to dublin and the adverts have been running for a few weeks now. i finally checked out a couple of episodes and visited the website… haha… in short: it’s beverly hills 90210 repackaged and displaced just a further bit south.
