anne has let us know about the various blog postings about umbrella.net - here and here and here - i guess it’s kind of nice that people are noticing the project - we’ve been working on it for quite some time, quietly - in our spare time - for the last year. it’s only because of araneum that we now have money and support to build it. well it’s nice, anyway.

ask 01 applies a ROM-player specially developed for this project. It is able to play loops of up to 30 seconds long sound samples. Having the size of a credit card it is easily and safely incorporated in the cloth. The audio is played back on four piezo speakers integrated in the double layers of the material. Located on sleeves and collar the character of perfume is adapted.

Vein 2 is a fibre optic necklace which changes colour as the wearer’s heartbeat increases to reflect their mood – blue indicates calm and red excitement. In order for it to work, the wearer has a jogger’s heart-rate monitor strapped to the chest. This sends a radio signal to a receiver and circuit board in the jewellery. A custom-made microchip counts the heartbeats and has been pre-programmed to command certain LEDs to light up in sequence. (more…)

like jonah has already mentioned, we had a great DATA on thursday… mark tribe from rhizome.org, columbia university, mary flanagan, and and kai-peter baeckman, of mistaril. the musical guest was herv - creator of game boy music that had the entire pub rockin’… conor o’boyle gave an impromptu update on looptracks - a great sound/image piece which he describes as an “interactive music video” - it’s very cool.
artist jen southern developed this project, ROAM which was part of the wear-me exhibit at the magna science center in the UK. the project takes snapshots of the landscape of a chosen participant’s video game travels and prints the results on fabric. the resulting garment is a means of recording journeys, of revealing lived experience on the body.

sebastian, tobias, and stephan are the creative team behind the dofly - an awesome contraption that can parasitically exploit public spaces. i met these guys at the 2002 back-up festival loungelab. they are brilliant! see the photos of me in the dofly at the end of the festival - stephan was kind enough to hook me up - i can only imagine the fun of actually having one of my own around…
