indigo som has a project about chinese restaurants in middle-of-nowhere places. she makes an interesting point. chinese food is as ubiquitous in mainstream american culture as hamburgers and fries, and yet still considered “foreign?” interesting photos and commentary. i like the focus on the mundane and everyday.
let them sing it for you sent by lalya - a great little website where text input is sung back using clips from different songs. just try it!
the fading ad campaign - very cool. as is dark passage, dark, menacing, and beautiful. the class III excavations reminds me of one late-night ride on the metro-north, where an elderly train car operator told me stories about all the unused track levels underneath the city. just like the railworker they met here.
Urban and Adventurous Artists - been browsing this list quite often lately. always puts a smile on my face, plus it’s a great resource.
got this from the itp alum list. great ‘itp’ers, and their even greater access to all the cultural capital that is NYC. (i miss it!)
My friend Jade made this great animated short with some friends of hers. Very clever and to the point.
Now this is good reading. Sure Thackara didn’t get all his facts right, and he did make an incendiary comment, but look at the impassioned response! So much better than distanced academic “discussion.” This got under people’s skin. It made them respond. And I do agree with Thackara’s last comment about the “Wild West” mentality sometimes expressed in Ubicomp circles…
Finally, the inaugural issue editorial of Pervasive Computing Magazine described the situation facing researchers as being “like the American West… a rich, open space where the rules have yet to be written, and the borders to be drawn”. My own recollection of the American West is that, far from being empty, it contained rather a lot of native Americans and buffalo – and we know what happened to them.
word. Important things to think about. Hopefully this gaffe will lead to more heated discussion.

an old photo. but i’m feeling sentimental…
